Common European Framework
Today we will speak about the Common European Framework (CEF). En español el Marco Común Europeo de Referencia para las Lenguas. (MCERL)
The Common European Framework (CEF) ofLanguages is a document which illustrates a communicative, action-based,learner-centred view of language. It promotes plurilingualism as a mean tofacilitate mobility in Europe and encouraging linguistic tolerance and respect(labourist interests). In this document, it is also included the Common Reference Levels which are at thecore of the Framework and are its best-known characteristics. The Common European Framework divides learners into three broad divisions that can be divided into six levels:
- A Basic User
- A1 Breakthrough or beginner
- A2 Waystage or elementary
- B Independent User
- B1 Threshold or intermediate
- B2 Vantage or upper intermediate
- C Proficient User
- C1 Effective Operational Proficiency or advanced
- C2 Mastery or proficiency
The Common Reference Levels are becomingincreasingly important in the organization of language teaching and assessment.
It should be stressed that theFramework does not set out to prescribe a particular approach to languageteaching and encourages readers to reflect on their own practice.
